Asia Bike Trade Show & Demo Days 2017: Leading the Way for Future Trends

Asia Bike 2017 final report

Biking for children and pedelecs trending - New dates for 2018

The 7th edition of the trade show Asia Bike, held in Nanjing, China, wrapped up on September 16, 2017. A total of 201 brands (2016: 321) displayed their latest innovations in bicycles, bicycle components and accessories across 30,000 square meters of exhibition space in the Nanjing International Expo Center. During the three-day exhibition, 5909 trade visitors (2016: 6729) and an additional 1924 end consumers (2016: 1901) attended the show, while 228 (2016: 235) media representatives reported from it. "Asia Bike, as a leading trade show and platform, presents the current developments and future trends in the bicycle industry. The decrease in the size of Asia Bike this year is a direct reflection of the tough bike market in China, whose growth has slowed over the past two years following rapid expansion and double-digit growth rates. However, we are happy to see that exhibitors are taking a positive attitude toward future developments in the market and are already reacting to these changes with their innovations and ideas," said Richard Li, Project Director of Asia Bike.

"This is the first time that I have come to Asia Bike in China. I feel very good when I walk in the hall. The show, the building as a whole, the entire area, and everything is very well organized. In the future, we will further strengthen the close relationship between Asia Bike and Eurobike, a relationship that fosters contact between the Chinese and European markets," said Dirk Heidrich, project leader of the Eurobike.

As the leading trade show for the bike industry in China, Asia Bike provides an effective platform for branding and stands out for the bike premieres, innovations, and conference program at the show. "I attend Asia Bike with the 2018 model year collections and even presentation and promotion plans for 2019," said Zhao Ke, General Manager of ZGL. "The quantity and quality of trade visitors that Asia Bike brings us far exceed our expectations. Instead of simply having a look around, visitors have in-depth conversations with us and we also get orders," said Li Zhenkun, Sales Director of Goldenwheel. Zhenkun continued by saying, "in this tough market, I think it is right for us to get a new start by digging deeper into the market, assembling the advantages of different brands, and delivering these to distributors and then finally to end consumers. The difficulty in the market is temporary. I have faith in the potential and future development of the sports bicycle market in China".

The new program "Luxury Two-Wheel Village," in which limited editions of top international handmade bicycles and classic motorbikes were displayed, attracted much attention. "The village shows the best products from different sub-sections of the bike industry, and was a perfect fit for the profile of Asia Bike, which is the most professional, top trade show in China," said Zhao Xiangyu, General Manager of Aita Cycle.

Asia Bike is once again setting new trends for the industry. In terms of bike products, bikes for children and pedelecs both attracted extensive attention from brands and visitors during the show. Cycling for children is one of the most popular activities at Asia Bike 2017, and represents yet another optimistic signal for the market. A series of cycling events intended especially for children encouraged a large number of parents and children to participate, including the Asia Bike Safe Cycling for Children, Puky Children Cycling Camp, Upland Park for Children, Puky JoyRide Fiesta, and the Powerkids Cycling. According to general statistics, nearly 1000 children attended the various cycling events held during the three-day Asia Bike. The active participation of these children generated great interest among brands. The other trend is pedelecs, which were exhibited in the Pedelecs Village as well as at the stands of many different exhibitors. "The Pedelecs concept refers to not only the products themselves, but also represents a new way forward. In the last several years, pedelec developments in Europe have moved ahead very quickly, with a growth rate of about 40% in 2016. As China has a huge population and the tendency toward electric pedaling assistance gradually becomes clear, we have faith in the great potential of pedelecs in China," said Chen Dingwu, CEO of Extraenergy. In the next 3 to 5 years, once regulations on the use of e-power are complete, the market of pedelecs will be very promising.

A strong focus on interactive bike testing is a characteristic part of Asia Bike. Since last year, the demo area has been extended from one pre-show test day to three days held concurrently with Asia Bike, in order to make the show more interactive and to provide more opportunities for communication between brands and visitors, something that exhibitors highly value. Even more interactive events were held in the demo area of Asia Bike 2017 than in the previous year, including as the Cyclo?cross and Pump PK. "Asia Bike provides brands with the opportunity to do business. For us, the testing part of Asia Bike is more attractive. I hope Asia Bike will enlarge the Demo Days and develop them into a festival in the future," said Tang Lingfeng, Marketing Director at Specialized Shanghai.
"Besides presenting products, the conferences and seminars also represent highlights of Asia Bike. These include the Asia Bike Academy, which enables brands to explain their technology, transfer the knowledge and express ideas," commented Zang Peng, Sales Vice President of XDS.

A survey of visitors to Asia Bike showed that 94.53% ranked the significance of Asia Bike as (very) important and 93.06% expressed interest in the next show.
