Oliver Sollbach, ADFC
In Europe mountain biking is intrinsically linked to the Alps. However, also in the lower mountain regions the tourist potential was noted at an early stage. To achieve a balance of interests among hikers, hunters and forest owners, regulatory measures were taken early on. The German Cycle Club (ADFC) developed a handout in 2001, a guideline on mountain biking for planners, the tourist industry and bikers. In 2011 this was extended in a leaflet containing signposting for mountain bike routes. Oliver Sollbach gives an overview of the current signposting practice in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This topic will be looked at in depth in workshops in the afternoon.

Oliver Sollbach studied architecture, urban and regional planning, as well as landscaping at Kassel University. He then did post-graduate studies in sustainable regional development. After free-lancing with the “Concept for a regional-tourist infrastructure development via a mountain bike route network system in the Werra-Meissner district” he switched in 2008 to the regional management of the local action group “Donauvital”. His next post was in the Hesselberg region where he was responsible for tourism project management. Today he is still responsible for the technical questions relating to mountain biking and racer bikes. He represents the ADFC in committees dealing with issues that affect the balance between nature and sport. He has been the head of the ADFC mountain bike guide training courses since 2010 and has for the last one and a half years provided back-up for the leadership team in the expert committee of cycle tourism.
