VELOBerlin 2019 puts on a bicycle festival in the German capital

29/04/2019
Final Report: VeloBerlin 2019, the bicycle festival

Berlin/Friedrichshafen - This weekend, the festival for everyone who loves bikes presented the latest bicycle trends and innovations at Berlin’s former Tempelhof Airport. Thanks to 300 exhibitors, 500 brands, a diverse program of stage presentations and workshops, as well as bike shows, 20 bike races and thousands of test rides, the megatrending bicycle showcase event was a fantastic experience for its 20,000 visitors. This year’s edition of VELOBerlin set both exhibitor and visitor records, making it one of Germany’s and Europe’s leading bicycle events for the general public.

In the run-up to this year’s VELOBerlin festival, it was already clear that the event’s floor space would be expanded by 20 percent to accommodate the large demand of exhibitors. "Several of the major bicycle brands closely monitored VELOBerlin’s growth last year, before deciding it was the ideal location to make their presentations in 2019,” explained Project Director Katja Richarz, who was joined by her event co-organizer EUROBIKE Division Director Stefan Reisinger from Messe Friedrichshafen.

The future of cycling is highly elaborate and features the right vehicle for every requirement - from gravel bikes as versatile off-road racing bikes with room for a little cargo (perhaps the most versatile sporty bicycles) to urban e-bikes that, in addition to their top-notch technology, make a design statement that expresses a new way of living.

In addition to the innovative spirit of numerous small and fledgling manufacturers of cargo bikes, next-gen bikers were the highlight of the "Testival” terrain located in the VELO YoungStars area. More than 20 purely children's and youth bike brands presented their light, partially modular and perfectly adapted models.

The exhibitors were particularly pleased with the well-informed visitors, whose interests were just as broad as the range of exhibitors itself at the event. Showcasing fixed-gear bikes, cargo bikes, e-bikes, low-step bikes, high-end racing bikes and so much more, VELOBerlin has become a landmark of the bicycle world.

From products to politics

Yet, cycling in Berlin requires more than just new products. In the afternoon, the topic encapsulated by the tagline "Fahrradstadt Berlin” (Bicycle City Berlin) was hotly debated by a panel discussion, which followed the presentation of awards of the same name by the Berlin Senate, honoring notable projects and initiatives. Ingmar Stresse, the State Secretary for Transport in the Berlin Senate Administration for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection, (and cycling enthusiast) was thrilled with the vast array of bicycle types at VELOBerlin, as this matched the Senate’s goal of getting more Berliners on bikes.  The fact that a lot of work still needs to be done in this area was illustrated by the stand and stage presentations of associations and initiatives such as ADFC, Changing Cities and VCD.

VELOBerlin 2020 will take place at Tempelhof Airport on April 18th and 19th - which will mark the bicycle festival’s 10th anniversary.

Comments about VELOBerlin 2019:

Ingmar Streese, State Secretary for Transport in the Berlin Senate Administration for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection: "Just like Berlin’s bicycle traffic, VELOBerlin is constantly growing from year to year. Our aim in Berlin is to see a major mobility shift toward bicycles - which is wonderfully illustrated by the wide variety of products at this bike festival.

Sebastian Maag, Marketing Manager for Germany, Austria & Switzerland, Specialized:  "Our debut appearance as an exhibitor at VELOBerlin was highly successful, overall.  We’re delighted with the many fruitful discussions, the public’s breadth of knowledge and diverse demographics, as well as the great atmosphere in the halls, on the old airport’s apron, and on the test tracks. We didn’t expect to attract such crowds.”

Lars Tamme, Account Manager, Cycling Sports: "It was crazy. We were completely overrun! Our VELOBerlin debut was a big success. Tons of visitors of all sorts and plenty of test rides.  The interest in e-bikes has been enormous, but conventional bicycles are also in great demand here.”

Jacob von Hacht, Events Director, Stevens: "We are very positively surprised about our debut appearance. In conjunction with our local dealers, we’re finding there’s strong interest in our brand here. The VELOBerlin is very well organized and very well attended and everyone’s enjoying themselves. Being here makes a lot of sense.”

Martha Wanat, CEO Bicicli Corporate Cycling Solutions GmbH: "A very curious, open, well-informed and diverse audience and definitely with a desire for innovation and test drives!”
