The Eurobike attracts more and more startups

Young companies enliven the bike industry – leading trade show offers them the perfect platform – Eurobike Awards to feature start-up category

A natural result of the e-boom in the bicycle industry is that more and more companies from other industries are discovering the bike for themselves. For startup entrepreneurs as well, the bicycle industry offers exciting new perspectives and business models. One indication of this is the steady growth in the number of startups exhibiting at the Eurobike (August 30 to September 2, 2017) over the last few years. These companies are able to gain valuable experience and generate strong positive momentum for their young businesses at the show.


Especially for young companies, an appearance at the Eurobike fulfills an important function. At the show, they are often able to present their products or services to a wide audience for the first time. While a financing round or crowdfunding can also have a public relations impact – an approach taken by many startups in the bicycle industry   – the personal interaction and exchanges with industry experts and the direct feedback from the market that they get at the show represent have an entirely different quality about them.


“For us, the Eurobike offered the perfect platform to pick up speed in the bike industry,” says Daniel Meermann, founder and CEO of the technology company Bloks, which specializes in networking bicycle components. “Thus, in our first year we were able to enter in a dialogue with many bike manufacturers and successfully present our products and solutions to them. The Eurobike is one of the most important events in the year for us to cultivate and expand our existing network of contacts.”


The E-Boom in the bike industry has, as in the case of Bloks, led to the founding of many new companies. But electronics need not necessarily be involved. For example, the start-up Texlock manufactures a bicycle lock that uses textiles. “At the Eurobike 2016, we presented a prototype of our lock at a shared stand,” explains Alexandra Baum, founder and CEO of Texlock GmbH, which launched a successful crowdfunding campaign after their Eurobike premiere. “We were able to get a look around at the show and get a peek inside the industry. That got us a lot of attention,” she adds. “After that, our development was so positive that this year we are going to exhibit with a stand of our own at the Eurobike.”


Sometimes, the today’s start-up can become an established, experienced exhibitor at the Eurobike in just a few years. After all, the flagship trade show is a platform for both new and well-established companies. “We are very pleased that the Eurobike is drawing so many young players in the market,” says Eurobike Head Stefan Reisinger. “Many trends and brands that have shaped the market in the last few decades came into their own at the Eurobike and this year, once again more than 100 companies will exhibit at the Eurobike for the first time, including many interesting start-ups.”


The Eurobike Awards are also taking the entrepreneurial book in the bike industry into account. This year, for the first time, an award for the start-up category will be introduced. The application deadline, like for all of the other categories, is July 12. The companies that receive the startup award will be exhibited alongside the other winners in the Eurobike Awards special exhibition in the Foyer West.
