Filament wound composite rims

Venn Rev range of rims are manufactured using a novel filament winding process adapted for composite bicycle rim manufacture. This process achieves the following objectives: 1) lower manufacturing cost due to elimination of manual layup step, 2) lower material cost and greater material availability due to utilization of carbon fiber tow and liquid resin, 3) lower material waste as we do not cut round shapes out of square fabric, 4) higher manufacturing process stability delivering higher batch uniformity, 5) potential for much higher performance than that achievable through manual layup methods as fibers are laid down under tension and are thus geometrically stable

Jury Statement

The industry is already familiar with automatic production processes for carbon components from the racing-bike frame segment. An automated process is now being used here to make wheels. The upshot is an extremely low-cost product in its category that also stands out for its high level of accuracy.
